Recently, we reported on the short attention span that free apps get from iPhone users. As soon as the novelty wears thin, these apps are gone. Unfortunately, fotokasten might be one of these casualties.
The app basically allows you to pick one of the provided templates plus an image from your camera roll (or you can shoot a picture with Camera). Once the image is selected, fotokasten applies the effect and then underlays the processed image under the template. This makes for some fun pictures, but once I tried most of these templates, I quickly dismissed the app. The developer promises to provide frequent updates with new templates, so maybe I will go back to this app ever so often when a new set of templates becomes available.
One problem with the app: The templates are rather small, thus the resulting images are typically less than 800 pixels wide. My guess is that the developer did not want to (or did not have) the algorithms to mask some imperfections in the effects application and template overlay process. Also, fotokasten seems sluggish as is, so processing 4x the number of pixels might have slowed the app down into unbearable territory.
How does the developer make money? fotokasten features in-app advertising.
Since it’s free, it does not hurt to try it out, but don’t expect it to stay on your iPhone for a long time.
Price: Free from iTunes.
