Mobile WiFi usage grows rapidly, especially on iPhone and iPod Touch

WiFi Usage @ iphonephotovideo.com iphone photo video iPod Touch itouch iCameraWe use our iPhones not only to capture video or take photos, but also to connect. In fact, to connect a lot!

According to JiWire’s first Mobile Audience Insight Report, more than 97% of all mobile WiFi connections in North America came from Apple devices, with the iPod Touch (WiFi only) not surprisingly edging out the iPhone (WiFi and 3G) by 6 percentage points. Equally interesting, most of us spend serious time hunched over our screens in our favorite coffee shop at least once a week. Or just connect for a quick email and score check while standing in line. A bit surprisingly, but not really when I reflect on my own Starbucks work visits, we do this often locally – in fact, 83% of all mobile access happen locally in our neighborhood.

What would be even more interesting, but is missing in JiWire’s report, is what exactly we are doing while being connected. How much we upload to Facebook, chat with friends or just check the Dow or the latest sports scores…

Download the report – it’s a fascinating read.

Full disclosure: A few years back while working at Intel Corporation, I hired JiWire to do Wi-Fi hotspot usage analyses for the Wi-Fi project that I led at that time. That engagement was not related nor did it contribute to any of the data they published in their Mobile Audience Insight Report
