Before I switched to the Mac and to Adobe Lightroom, I used Downloader Pro on Windows to transfer my pictures from multiple cameras and camera phones to my PC.
Sure, you can always connect a camera or put a memory card into a card reader and then drag the images in Windows Explorer. But Downloader Pro provides a much better way of getting your photos ingested into Windows:
- You can configure it to download automatically as a card is inserted into a card reader
- Files can automatically be renamed and sorted into a folder structure, which is very helpful when you shoot pictures with a combination of an iPhone and other cameras.
- When shooting with multiple cameras, chances are that these cameras will generate pictures with duplicate filenames. Downloader Pro can automatically resolve these during a download
- Up to 2 backup copies can be created during download, even to locations on your file server. This feature alone is worth getting Downloader Pro, since we should never start editing an image or erase photos from a memory card unless we have at least two copies on two different hard drives.
- RAW formats from all major camera manufacturers are supported.
- The newest version also allows for geo-tagging your images using GPS data from devices like the Sony GPS-CS1 tracker, Garmin eTrex Venture CX etc.
So if you still use drag and drop to import your photos, we recommend to give Downloader Pro a try.
Verdict: Highly recommended
Price: $29.95 from Breeze Systems after a 30-day trial.
