Free Me from Free The Apps

by Veit on 08/19/2009

FreeTheApps.com is using the one-trick-wonder principle and social media to take the AppStore by storm. Release lots of free apps that do just one thing, then promote them through clever social media marketing and make money by serving up ads. It works for them — their free “Crop for Free”, “HDR for Free” and “Flash for Free” apps rank very high on the free apps lists in the AppStore.

HDR for Free mainly introduces noise into the photo. A LOT of noise! Ugly noise!

Unfortunately, their apps do not live up to the high rankings. Of course there is my personal preference that I would rather have one $1.99 app doing 10 functions well than 10 free apps doing one function each with mediocre results. I don’t like to have to fire up separate apps, select the same image over and over again, then do the one trick, maybe undo it (but cannot redo it), save, exit and then fire up the next app. Never mind, either, that at least the HDR and Flash apps are painfully slow compared to other photo editors. I might be willing to deal with that, if the results were great. Alas, they aren’t. I’d call them mediocre at best (Flash) and downright ugly (HDR) at worst.

Flash for Free lowers the brightness and contrast of the image, thus feels washed out compared to Auto Levels in Photogene

If you want to save some pennies, go for these apps. Otherwise, stick with PhotoGene or PhotoForge – both are much better choices!

Our verdict: Not recommended!

eh, its still free, so i can’t complain. what bothers me is the number of “cr-apps” crappy apps that are flooding the store. those “bikini” and “sexy” apps are the worst AND they charge money! are you serious??? the app store is turning into a lame porn store with apps like naughty nurse, xxx-ray, and tons more.

Bruce,

totally with you – it’s amazing how many “one-shot-wonders”, “one-trick-Ponies” and other apps there are. And we all know sex sells, now matter how crappy or sleazy…
