Apple Tablet: optional vs. mandatory data plan = make or break

Also, the tablet, basically an oversized iPod Touch, would be in the $500-700 range rather than current estimate of $800. It would come with a 3G data plan and the tablet might be subsidized by Verizon or AT&T (whoever will end up being the carrier).

Rarely is a technology buying decision black or white, but this one is. Frankly, I have zero interest in getting a second data plan for a second device, regardless of who the carrier is or what the device is. It is enough to have one data plan and to be committed to a carrier for 2 years. There is simply no need for a second one.

Just look at the economics. The cheapest AT&T iPhone plan is $69.99. Verizon sells 6GB of data for $60/month. That makes $130/month for both devices. For that money, I can get a Verizon MiFi for $60 to feed the tablet and an iPod Touch plus my notebook and then get a no-contract, prepaid phone for $50/month. Want to save even more? Ditch the prepaid phone and use Skype. Or stick with the iPhone and tether the tablet assuming AT&T will allow this at a reasonable price.

Without a contract obligation, I will buy the tablet, no questions asked. With the contract I will not. It’s that simple, at least for me. And I’m not the only one. I hope Apple is listening, since this will be money that either goes into their pockets or stays in mine. But it will not end up in the carrier’s pockets.
