Ever so often, I run across a product which makes me scratch my head and utter the words: “I don’t get it”. Unfortunately, the Zgrip Pro is one of them.
Oh, I totally get the product. It looks great, very adjustable and seems to have enough heft (at one pound) to feel comfortable – in short, it seems like a product that you want since it should help you to steady your video shoots. Until you look at the price: $295.
Here’s what I don’t get: Why does this product sell for almost 300 dollars? What is so special about it? Sure, it’s made in the U.S.A., so that might account for some of the price, since similar products out of Asia will become available for $50 or less. But manufacturing in America cannot be the only reason for the product’s cost. What else is there that I’m not seeing?
Add to that the fact that if you want to mount the Zgrip on a tripod or monopod, you need an adapter which sets you back another $44. Why can a product like this not come with the usual 3/8 inch screw mount? Or include the adapter free of charge?
The potentially good news: The company is working on a Consumer version. Let’s hope the consumer version will be sold at a much better price point and does not require you to buy extra accessories which in my opinion should be included.
Price: $295.00 from the Zacato Store
