I’ve been following audio and video home entertainment equipment for many years …back to the 1970s… which was before the word ‘video’ was paired with ‘audio’ in the same product description.
So, I’m amazed these days at the level of performance and sophistication you can get from even sub-$500 AV receivers.
Pioneer, one of the long-time leaders in audio and video (I have one of the company’s Elite 50″ Plasmas, and love it), now has a ‘works with iPhone’ logo program that ensures that its complete line of receivers, from the cheapest one you can buy for $200-300 to the most expensive at $7000 or so, works with the iPhone and iPod lines via a USB connection. For instance, in the cheaper receiver models, you can plug in your iPhone and if you get a call, the system will automatically mute the music being played from it to allow you to take the call, much less hear the phone ring.
What’s really cool, though, is that in the more expensive Elite line of receivers, Pioneer allows you to plug in your iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch, and play back videos. So, you’ve just gotten home from shooting video with your iPhone and you want to watch it to see what you captured. If you’ve already bought and installed a Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, 23TXH, SC25 or SC27, starting at $700 and working up to $2000 MSRP, you can simply plug in your 3GS via the supplied (that’s right, Pioneer actually supplies it) USB cable and control your iPhone via the on-screen display rendered by the receiver.
It’s that simple to play back your iPhone video on your 50″ TV — That is, unless you’re a certain blogger on this site who shall remain nameless in analog infamy
for his complete absence on Moore’s curve.
While Pioneer is not the only company to make AV receivers that can accommodate iPhones/iPods, it’s the first that I know of that so prominently promotes this playback capability as part of its new product roll-out of premium lineup.
