Outstanding functionality, intuitive design, great value, always on our iPhones – these are just some of the criteria we evaluate before we bestow our “Editor’s Pick” award to any iPhone software, service or periphery. Not a lot of Editor’s Picks have been awarded, since we are tough judges – actually, there are quite a number of categories where we yet have to award one. But as more and more apps will be released, we expect the competition to increase and thus push the bar on everyone. Ultimately, this is good news for us consumers!
Following are our Editor’s Picks:
Photo Capture
ProCamera used to be the reigning champion, but lost its crown a few weeks ago after it became apparent that Apple would not approve their iPhone 3.0 version due to the use of an undocumented interface. Just this week, though, we awarded the Editor’s Pick award to Zipix for its great one-touch improvements of any image taken with the iPhone camera.
Photo Editing
This has probably been the closest call of all Editor’s Pick awards. PhotoGene is the incumbent, but PhotoForge is closing in very rapidly. In fact, we might even hand out an editor’s pick to both of them, since we like both and keep using them both. But for now, PhotoGene is still hanging on. [Update: We just awarded PhotoForge an Editor's Pick as well!]
Photo Viewing
Apple’s Photo app is the one to beat and we have yet to see a better one. No Editor’s pick. However, we still recommend to view your photos via Flickr rather than sync’ing them through iTunes.
Panorama Photography
AutoStitch truely impressed us and made me eat my words that the iPhone is not ready for panoramic photography. This was probably one of the easiest Editor’s Picks we ever handed out!
Companion Apps
Companion apps are iPhone apps that help photographers shooting with DSLRs to create better images. There are a number of very impressive companion apps, with many deserving Editor’s picks. Our favorite companion apps can be found here. If there is one app that should be singled out, it would be iBird – certainly one of the most stunning apps we’ve seen on the iPhone so far!
Video Capture
No Editor’s Pick
Video Editing
No Editor’s Pick
Video Playback
No Editor’s Pick
Video Upload
Apple’s photo app is the app of choice to upload to YouTube. For Facebook and Twitter, we handed out two Editor’s Picks to VideoUp for Facebook and TwitVid.
More Editor’s Picks will be awarded and you will learn about them here. Stay tuned!
