iBird – A truly stunning bird guide for iPhone photographers

iBird Companion App @ iphonephotoshow.com iphone photoRegardless whether or not you are a photographer, if you want to see an example of a magnificent iPhone app, look no further than iBird.

iBird is one of the top rated reference apps in the AppStore and it shows immediately why. In short, this app is simply stunning. The visuals are great and I have never seen an app with as much depth of features as this application has. If you want to learn more about a particular bird, there are different tabs on the bottom (you can slide left and right for even more tabs) that let you pick images, photos, larger scale portraits, descriptions and identity, range, ecology and comparisons with other birds. Of course, there are live links to Birdipedia and Flickr, so you can learn even more and see even more pictures.

As if that is not enough, they did a superb job in implementing search. Since I would be hard pressed to really describe a particular bird, their search engine come to my rescue: Not only does it let me enter geographical data, but also the anatomy of the bird (size, shape, wing shape, colors, head, beaks, crown color) as well as habitat information. Through this, searching is really easy and narrowing down a selection is fun and quick. The only thing missing was entering my GPS data, so it could narrow down a search by whatever kinds of birds are typically around my location at today’s date. But even without it, I did not have a problem finding what I wanted.

Also included are sounds, so I can play calls for all the birds. They are surprisingly loud on my iPhone – my cat definitely had no problem hearing the call of an American Robin a few rooms away and came by to check out the action…

Additionally, there’s plenty of help, a glossary and, of course, I can follow the maker’s Twitter stream live in the app.

This app is truly a showcase of what can be done on the iPhone. If you are a birder or into bird photography, this app is a must. Otherwise, download the free iBird 15 app and be prepared for a great experience! Maybe it will jump-start your interest (or your kids) in birding, after all…

The app exists in multiple Geographic flavors as well as a Plus and Pro version, which cover the entire U.S. Both of them are a whopping 300MB download, so you might have to make some space on your iPhone before you can install it!
